L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue
Known as the «Venise Comtadine» (Venice of the Comtat), L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is a small Provençal town built around water.
The Sorgue River, with its crystal-clear waters, divides into numerous branches that cross the historic centre, creating canals, small islands and very picturesque corners.
The presence of the river made it possible to power mills and develop industries and traditional crafts.
There were once 66 water wheels; around a dozen are still preserved and operating today.
It is one of the most important antiques centres in Europe.
Today, it is home to more than 300 antique dealers and traders in vintage and historic objects, making it one of Europe's major destinations for lovers of interior design, art and vintage pieces.
It is ideal for a day trip. You can explore the town on foot, and around every corner you will find a place to appreciate art or take photographs.
Our suggestion is to leave your car (park here) and walk.
You can take your time, stop for a coffee at one of the many cafés, several of them overlooking the river.
The antique dealers and art galleries are a whole subject in themselves. There are many of them, with very interesting objects and collections. In that case, we would recommend taking an extra day.
If you have small bicycles, the town is ideal for cycling and exploring. We did not check whether there was a place where you could rent them.
You can also find shops selling spices and regional products, as well as boulangeries and patisseries.
